Just Us ~ San Antonio Family Children Photographer

Maddy was at dance class. Zach was at home working on his school work.

So Joshua and I headed off to the park. It was just the two of us on the walking trail…alone…one-on-one…talking about the crazy-big trees, listening to the crinkle sound that the leaves made as we walked through them, spying on little green bugs, chasing squirrels…no plan of where we were going…no one there to compromise with on which trail we would take. It was just us….something that is rare.

With three, busy kids, it is hard to have one-on-one time with each of them…but when it happens, it is a head-slap moment reminding me of why this needs to happen. Our walk was a time for my middle child to have my undivided attention…he didn’t have to share me with anyone….he had me all to himself…to ask questions, to tell me his stories, to share his thoughts, to explore, and know that my attention was focused on him. We all need that every-so-often…to have the undivided attention of someone we love. Even if it’s just for a little while…to not have to compete with others, or the chime of electronic devices, or with the noise of the outside world…to be able to share thoughts, dream out loud, and just be with someone you love.

As we walked, I let him decide what pictures I would take. Even though I took the photos, I got to see the trail through his eyes…it is so beautiful to see the world through the eyes of a nine-year old boy. He showed me things I might have missed, and gave me an appreciation of exploration that I hadn’t had since I was nine. Kicking dirt, moving tree limbs, hiding in the tree branches, having pretend wars, climbing, running, finding stink bugs, and appreciating things that others might call weeds…

When we give of ourselves, we always get back more than what we gave. Our walk was supposed to be for him, but I left the park that day thankful for the time and undivided attention that he gave to me. ♥
